| Over the first ten laps the gap between the first three remained close and the title looked to be Mansells. However Mansell was experiencing a "notchy" gearbox and increasing difficulty changing up and down so on lap ten he decided to run the last five laps in just fifth gear. Scott Mansell:
"The gearchange became harder lap after lap and I knew there was a problem developing. On lap ten I decided to leave it in fifth gear for the remainder of the race as I did not want to get stuck in first or second gear."
